Antique 18th Century Brown Calash Cane Hoop Hood Bonnet. |

This rare antique brown calash cane hoop hood bonnet dates from between 1770 and 1830. It is hand stitched and made of cane hoop supports covered with a brown silk fabric. This rare early calash is collapsible and has a ruffle trim edged front framing the face and a back neck curtain drape. The calash were also referred to as the "Bashful Bonnet" and were popular for promenading and travel to protect the towering hairdos. They were named after the french word "caleche" (carriage) because they resembled a carriages folding top. It is fully lined in a stiffened gauze flax lining and is missing the string ribbons and chin ties. The calash measures 13 inches tall, 10 inches wide and 14 inches deep when extended out. It is in good condition, with only a few black age spots on the back, a few tiny holes and some wear along the fabric cane hoop casings. This is truly a rare and wonderful early example. |
