This antique Victorian Civil War era purple lavender stripe silk hoop skirt train ball gown dress dates from the 1860s. It is hand stitched made of a bright purple color mauveine aniline dye and lighter lavender color striped silk taffeta fabric. There is black lace trim edging the top, sleeve cuffs, skirt and a white Brussels point de gaze lace collar. This beautiful ball gown two piece dress has a short crop bodice top, with long full sleeves, silk covered buttons front closure, additional hooks underneath the waistband to attach to the skirt and is fully lined with cotton padding bust enhancers sewn inside. The top measures 15 inches long, with a 38 inch bust, 26 inch waist, 19 inch long sleeves and 18 inch back. There is a matching fabric long floor length full hoop skirt (hoop not included) with long back train, which can be shortened from underneath with underpinning hook attachments, hook closures on the back waistband and is fully lined in a brown cotton fabric. The skirt measures 42 inches long in the front, 60 inches long in the back, with a 28 inch waist. This remarkable dress has a versatile style which can worn with skirt shortened, pinned up during the day for easy movement and let down at night for evening wear with a ball gown train. The dress is in excellent condition, with only some slight faint underarm discoloration. This is truly a rare, museum quality piece of wearable Civil War antique Victoriana textile art! |
