Antique Kashmir Hand Embroidered Red Wool Paisley Shawl. |
This antique Kashmir hand embroidered red wool paisley shawl dates from the early 1800s. It is all hand stitched and hand loomed, made of a homespun woven red wool and natural dyes. This stunning shawl has wonderful workmanship and detail, with a yellow thread hand stitched embroidered paisley pine cone shaped tear drop motif known as the boteh and floral leaf design. There is a colorful hand embroidered, pieced, patchwork fringed decorative border edging surrounding the entire shawl. There is a small green wool embroidered outline of a star in the center which has been replaced in the middle with red velvet fabric at a later date (see close-up). These early paisley shawls were made in Kashmir, Persia and India. This lovely large shawl throw measures 72 by 66 inches. It is in good useable condition, with a few small frayed holes in the center and along the border edging, as well as some loose missing thread embroidery stitches (see close-up). This is truly a rare and extraordinary early piece of paisley textile art. |
