Chinese Eight Immortals Figural Embroidered Robe Coat. |
This vintage Chinese Eight Immortals figural embroidered robe coat dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched, made of a white silk satin damask fabric, with a brocaded cherry blossom, bamboo pattern. There is blue raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work of the Eight Immortals of Chinese mythology done in roundel medallions, butterflies, bats and peony flowers. The Eight Immortals are considered to be signs of prosperity and longevity. There is a large cut out cloud collar and side slit vent trim edging with colorful figural embroidery work. This beautiful robe surcoat is long mid length, loose fitting, with a tall mandarin collar, white silk knotted button toggle closures down the front and yellow silk, colorful floral butterfly embroidered sleeve band cuffs. It is fully lined in white silk, with an old "Made in China" tag sewn inside. The robe measures 43 inches long, with 44 inch hips, waist, bust and a 16 inch back. It is in good wearable condition, with only some slight staining and wear on the cloud collar. This is a wonderful piece of wearable antique Chinese textile art.
