Antique Botanical Green Chintz Roller Print Shirt Jacket. |
This antique early botanical green chintz roller print shirt jacket dates from the 1830s. It is all hand stitched, made of a rare luscious green color printed cotton chintz fabric, with a roller print floral botanical pattern design done in colorful natural dyes. There is a black dye iron mordant used for outlining the flowers which has eaten away the fabric in areas creating holes. This beautiful botanical shirt jacket has a loose fitting style which could have been worn as a morning bed jacket robe cover-up or maternity wear. It has an open front with no closure, smocking pleated gathers along the shoulders, long full flared bell shape pagoda style sleeves and is partially lined in the top half with a muslin fabric. The top measures 28 inches long, with a 44 inch waist, 40 inch bust, 16 inch back and 28 inch wide sleeves. It is in as-is fair condition, with several areas of weakness and deterioration in the fabric (see close-up). This is truly a rare early find which would be great for study, pattern and design. |
