This Victorian era purple silk print violet morning robe dress gown dates from 1900. It is made of a purple and white silk damask brocaded fabric done in a geometric circular scrolling pattern print. There are hand painted violets done on silk trim around the neckline collar, cuffs and front dress panel insert. The violet is a symbol for modesty, virtue, affection, and faithfulness. This beautiful wrapper robe style morning dress gown is loose fitting, floor length, has a slight pleated back skirt train, a high collar neckline with ruffled flounce shawl collar, lilac silk cross stitched trim edging, long full bell shape sleeves, with fitted inner sleeves and hook & eye closures. It is fully lined in a light weight cotton muslin fabric. The robe measures 56 inches long, with 50 inch hips, a 32 inch waist, 34 inch bust, 12 inch back and 21 inch long sleeves. This wonderful wrapper morning gown dress is in as-is fair condition, with some faint age spotting and fraying on the back skirt hemline. There are several small frays and splits in the silk painted violet trim and front skirt panel (see close-up). This is a wonderful rare piece of Victoriana textile art which could be used for study, pattern, or restoration. |
