This vintage Chinese cheongsam silk embroidered New Year dress dates from the 1960s. It is made of an emerald green silk satin fabric, with colorful raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work of children celebrating the Chinese New Year on the front of the dress only. There are many small children flying kites, holding toys, carrying lanterns and pulling wagons. In the center is the Chinese deity bodhisattva of Guanyin riding atop a dragon flanked by two children waving banners. This sexy form fitting cheongsam Chinese dress has a high mandarin style collar, key hole opening front neckline, short sleeves, short skirt with side slit vents and a back zipper closure. It is fully lined. Manchu women wore normally a one-piece dress which were called "qipao" or "banner dress" and has become the traditional dress for Chinese women. The dress measures 36 inches long, with 34 inch hips, a 26 inch waist and 34 inch bust. This pretty "Suzie Wong" style dress is in excellent clean wearable condition and is a wonderful piece of wearable Chinese textile art. |
