This Edwardian era antique Chinese silk soutache embroidered shawl cloak cape coat dates from 1910. It is made of a dark navy blue silk satin fabric with a cut out design and black sheer silk chiffon fabric backing lining. There is black silk braided trim raised soutache embroidery work done in an abstract pheasant feather bird design. The inside sheer black silk chiffon lining has antique Chinese silk hand embroidered trim, with orange and blue silk embroidered butterfly square panels on the front opening. This magnificent shawl cloak cape coat is loose fitting, with button trim on the front opening, but no closure. It has been beautifully constructed with wonderful workmanship and detailing. The cape is a large size, measuring 40 inches long, 23 inches across the shoulders and has a 165 inch bottom circumference. It is in good wearable condition, with some fraying of the Chinese silk trim inside and the silk chiffon backing lining on the top and staining inside (see close-ups). There is a tiny hole in the silk fabric near the back shoulder. This is truly a rare and unique piece of wearable Chinese textile art! |
