This antique Victorian era wire mesh horse hair crinolette skirt bustle pad support dates from 1880. It is made of a flexible wire metal mesh cage, done in a puffed pillow crescent shape, with a layered style and horse hair stuffed cotton padding along the sides with lace trim edging. There is a cotton twill canvas cloth strap belt around the waist with adjustable buckle closure. This unique undergarment would have been worn under a bustle skirt dress to expand the fullness or support the back drape of the fanned train skirt. The bustle pad measures 10 by 6 1/2 inches, with a 31 inch adjustable waistband. It is in good wearable condition, with some wear, rust spotting on the wire mesh and dirt soiling on the cotton fabric. This is a wonderful unique example of a Victoriana ladies undergarment!
