Antique Chimayo Blanket Red Wool Hand Woven Long Duster Coat. Tweet
|
This vintage antique Chimayo blanket red wool hand woven long duster coat dates from the 1940s. It is made of a hand loomed red, gray, black & white wool blanket style body with a colorful New Mexico Southwest design. Weaving the Chimayo style begun in the early years of the 20th century, the style is basically two stripes and a center design. The stripes are clearly derived from the Rio Grande blanket and the center design is an outgrowth of Saltillo tapestry techniques. This beautiful blanket long floor length duster style coat is loose fitting, has a gray fringe trim edged wide lapel shawl collar, two large patch pockets with bottom fringe trim, long full sleeves with rolled cuffs top fringe trim and an open front with no closure. It is unlined, with shoulder padding sewn inside and no label, but I believe this to be a Ortega's Chimayo from New Mexico. The coat measures 46 inches long, with 55 inch hips, a 55 inch waist, 50 inch bust, a 18 inch back and 24 inch long sleeves. It is in good condition, but has not been cleaned. There are two tiny faint stains on the front lapel and a tiny moth nip hole on the sleeve cuff (see close-ups). This is truly a rare and wonderful one of a kind piece of wearable Southwestern textile art! |
