This antique Chinese pink silk embroidered phoenix bird opera robe coat dates from the early 1900s. It is made of a light pinkish purple lilac color silk fabric, with bright colorful raised padded satin stitch embroidery work outlined in silver metallic thread couching work. There are embroidered mythological phoenix birds, sun, smoke clouds and waves of water along the bottom. The phoenix is the symbol of strength, resilience, good fortune, opportunity and luck. It can also symbolize rebirth, renewal and the sun. This beautiful theatrical opera robe style coat is a long mid length, loose fitting, with long exaggerated full sleeves, silk ties for closure along the side and is fully lined. The robe measures 40 inches long, with 50 inch hips, a 50 inch waist, 42 inch chest and 26 inch long sleeves. It is in good condition, with some color bleeding stains along one sleeve (see close-up). This is truly a wonderful piece of antique Chinese textile art! |
