This vintage Ortega's Chimayo blanket woven wool tunic top vest Barber silver quarter buttons dates from the 1950s. It is made of a hand loomed black wool blanket style body with a colorful New Mexico Southwest design. Weaving the Chimayo style begun in the early years of the 20th century, the style is basically two stripes and a center design. The stripes are derived from the Rio Grande blanket and the center design is an outgrowth of Saltillo tapestry techniques. There are three Barber silver quarters dating from 1903, 1909 and 1914 made into buttons. This beautiful blanket sleeveless vest style tunic top is loose fitting, with open sides, button closures and black silk piping trim. It is unlined, with a "Ortega's 100% All Wool Hand Woven Chimayo, N.M." Size Large label sewn inside. The vest measures 26 inches long, with a 52 inch waist and 44 inch chest. It is in good condition. This is truly a wonderful one of a kind piece of wearable Southwestern textile art! |
