Vintage Art Deco Egyptian Assuit Black Net Silver Shawl Scarf Large Size. Tweet
|
This amazing antique Art Deco Egyptian Assuit black net silver shawl scarf dates from the 1920s. It is made of a sheer black cotton netting, covered with thousands of hand applied silver metal pieces done in a decorative Art Deco abstract geometric diamond starburst design, with a decorative pattern along the ends and border edging. These shawls are also known as Tulle-bi-telli, Assuit, Asyut, Assyut, Assiut. Tulle-bi-telli translates roughly as "net with metal". The shawls were made popular during the 1920s with the discovery of King Tut's tomb and were made in Assiut, Egypt. This beautiful belly dancing shawl style scarf wrap is the largest size I have seen measuring at 105 inches long and 50 inches wide. There is a hand stitched rolled hem edging, which has become unraveled in areas (see close-up). It is in good condition, with only some faint fade discoloration staining near the center. This is truly an exceptional, heavy, quality, one of a kind piece of wearable Egyptian textile art! |
