This antique Chinese dragon phoenix gold couching embroidery red silk opera robe dates from late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty.

This antique Chinese dragon phoenix gold couching embroidery red silk opera robe dates from late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is made of a red silk fabric, with gold metallic couching and colorful raised padded satin stitch hand embroidery work. There are gold dragons with 4 open claws, large round eyes on the front and back, with the phoenix bird along the back sleeves. A dragon and phoenix represent husband and wife, signifying wedded bliss, also a symbol for the Emperor and Empress. There are Chinese figural people colorfully embroidered on both the front and back carrying various objects, fish and riding ponies. This magnificent theatrical opera costume is created in the style of Manchu style dragon court robe, with a loose fitting, long mid knee length, side vents, with colorful metallic couching waves of water along the bottom skirt hem, long wide full sleeves, silk ties for closure along the side and is fully lined. The robe measures 40 inches long, with a 40 inch chest, 40 inch waist and 22 inch long sleeves. It is in good as-is condition, with some faint stains, wear along the neckline, 2 missing tie strap closures and some frayed loose gold thread couching work (see close-up). This is still a wonderful piece of antique Chinese textile art!
