This antique Victorian era Hubert & Riqueur Paris label black silk, lace, jet mantle cloak cape dates from 1890. It is made of a black silk fabric, covered with a black lace overlay, black velvet appliques, sequins creating a butterfly wing design on the back and a sheer Swiss dot net tulle trim ruffle edging along the bottom. This beautiful beaded evening mantle cloak cape has a fitted long mid length style, with a beaded high band collar, hook closures down the front, an inside silk strap tie at the waist and is fully lined inside with a black silk taffeta fabric lining. There is a "Hubert & Riqueur Paris" designer couture label and "B. Altman & Co. Paris New York" department store label sewn inside the neck. The cape measures 36 inches long, 26 inches wide across the back shoulders, with a 14 inch neck. It is in fair as-is condition, with several small frayed splits on the inside silk lining which should be removed and replaced, fraying along the collar, bottom tulle net trim and a few loose missing beads (see close-ups). This is truly a rare and outstanding piece of antique Victoriana Parisian designer couture wearable beaded art! |
