This rare antique Bavarian folk costume Riegelhaube Alsatian bow bonnet dates from the mid 1800s. It is made of a rigid rag linen base covered with a blue silk fabric and silver metallic accents. The metallic threads are hand stitched in a raised padded satin stitch embroidery couching work floral leaf design. There is gold silk thread trim stitching around the base and a off white stiff net pleated lace trim along the top front crown. There are french gray silk brocade ribbon trim draping down, with side pleating and a large bow at the back. The inside is lined in a home spun heavy linen with "Alsatian" written in ink. This European Riegelhaube bonnet is done in the style of the traditional headdress worn by the women of Munich Germany. The silver caps were worn primarily by unmarried women. This beautiful bonnet measures 21 inches in circumference around the face and is 9 inches wide. It is in good wearable condition with only some minor wear. This is truly a rare find. |
