This antique Chinese eight immortals silver bell child hat dates from the 1950s. It is all hand stitched, made of a purple plum color silk fabric base, covered with vibrant colorful silk trim and beadwork. There are eight immortal figures stamped out of a sheet of silver attached onto the front. They represent high, noble character and vast spirit. On the back are silver fish charms which symbolize happiness, good luck, abundance and bells for to make noise and scare off evil spirits. This unusual unique shaped hand crafted hat has a detailed 3 dimensional cut out decorative design, with colorful pom poms on top for additional protection. There is a tie chin strap and is fully lined in linen. The hat measures 20 inches inside circumference. It is in excellent wearable condition. These Han Chinese children's and infant hats were designed to provide protection from evil spirits, demons, and ghosts, but also to influence the wearing with important qualities such as wealth, health, courage, academic success, happiness, long life, grace, and beauty.
