This antique Victorian era gentleman's violet french knot embroidered smoking cap dates from the 1860s. It is hand stitched and made of a black velvet fabric, with colorful wool yarn french knot hand embroidery work done in a purple violet flower and gold, ecru leaf pattern design. The violet was a popular symbol of faithfulness, virtue, love and affection during the Victorian era. There is a purple and gold silk fringe tassel trim on the top. The cap is fully lined in a padded quilted black silk fabric inside. These rare early ethnic Turkish fez style "smoking caps" were all the rage with the style conscious Victorian gentleman. The cap measures 22 inches inside circumference. It is in excellent wearable condition, with only some minor wear around the bottom silk lining. This is truly a rare and wonderful piece of men's Victoriana wearable art. |
