This antique German folk bonnet cap silk silver embroidered dates from 1850s. It is hand stitched, made of a black silk moire fabric, with silver bullion metal thread done in raised padded satin stitch embroidery couching work and sequins. There is black silk brocade ribbon trim on the front sides, with blue beading and silver thread embroidery work and longer black silk ribbon ties draping down the sides. The inside is fully lined in a brown and red cotton calico striped leaf print fabric. This traditional ethnic European German folk costume cap bonnet would have been worn for mourning. The beautiful bonnet measures 18 inches around the face, with 42 inch long ribbons hanging down the front. It is in good wearable condition with only some slight fraying along the silk ties. This is a truly a wonderful piece of German textile folk art. |
