This antique gold gilt metallic embroidered silk German folk bonnet cap dates from the early 19th century. It is hand stitched, made of a pale pinkish cream color silk fabric, with gold gilt bullion metal thread embroidery work outlining gold leaf flowers, hand sewn metallic sequins, jewel encrusted accents and gold lace trim edging the front. The inside is fully lined in a linen fabric. This traditional ethnic European German folk costume cap bonnet would have been worn by the women of Munich, the Bavarian region in Germany from 1755 through about 1850. The beautiful bonnet measures 19 inches around the face, and is 8 inches deep. It is in as-is fair condition, with some fraying along the silk seam and has a few missing, loose sequined trims. This is a truly a rare and wonderful piece of early German textile folk art! |
