19th Century Antique Silver Metallic Embroidered Black Velvet German Folk Bonnet Cap. Tweet

This antique silver metallic embroidered black velvet German folk bonnet cap dates from the early 19th century. It is hand stitched, made of a black silk velvet fabric, with silver bullion metal thread lace trim, raised padded satin stitch embroidery couching stumpwork and hand sewn metallic sequins. There is a silver metallic ribbon bow trim on the bottom back. The inside is fully lined in a linen fabric which has some foxing faint age spots. This traditional ethnic European German folk costume skull cap bonnet would have been worn by the women of Munich, the Bavarian region in Germany from 1755 through about 1850. Unmarried women traditionally wore silver bonnets. The beautiful bonnet measures 26 inches in circumference. It is in excellent wearable condition. This is a truly a rare and wonderful piece of early German textile folk art! |
