This antique Victorian Civil War era black silk quilted widows mourning carriage bonnet dates from the 1860s. It is hand stitched, made of a black silk fabric, with quilting and purple silk pleated ruched trim edging. This women's widows mourning bonnet hood would have been worn for travel in a carriage and has a sun bonnet style with a long curtain cape ruffle back drape. It is fully lined in a brown polished cotton fabric. The bonnet measures 19 inches long, with a 16 inch neck and 24 inch circumference around the face. It is in good wearable condition, with only a few tiny moth nip holes along the purple wool trim edging around the face. This is truly a beautiful bonnet and wonderful piece of early Victoriana mourning! |
