This antique silver and gold metallic couching German folk bonnet cap dates from the early 19th century. It is hand stitched, made of a red silk fabric background base, covered with silver and gold bullion metal thread couching work done in a raised floral leaf cut work design. The inside is fully lined in a linen fabric which has some faint age spotting stains. This traditional ethnic European German folk costume skull cap bonnet would have been worn by the women of Munich, the Bavarian region in Germany from 1755 through about 1850. The beautiful bonnet measures 23 inches in circumference. It is in good wearable condition. This is a truly a rare and wonderful piece of early German textile folk art! |
