This antique Victorian woven black straw silk ribbon lace mourning bonnet hat dates from 1870. It is made of a wired framed covered with a basket weave tightly woven black straw crown and loosely woven open lattice work brim, with black silk grosgrain ribbon, midnight blue velvet and black lace trim gathered on top. This beautiful bonnet has an oval tear drop shape, with slight curved sides which come to a point at the top. There is a small inner crown lined in black silk and would have sat atop a full Gibson Girl style updo hairdo with hatpin's. The bonnet measures 33 inches in circumference outside and is 16 inches inside the crown. It is in good condition, with some minor wear and worn edging along the front brim. This is a wonderful piece of Victoriana mourning!
