Antique Chinese Child Infant Silk Applique Tiger Wind Hat. Tweet
|
This antique Chinese child infant silk applique tiger wind hat dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched, made of colorful silk fabrics, with an appliquéd tigers face on the front and on the top, with peaches and flowers appliquéd on the sides and back. This unusual animal shaped hand crafted hat has two different detailed 3 dimensional faces of a smiling grinning tiger, with it's ferocious powers make it an especially popular protective image and would have been used to frighten off evil spirits. This charming child's wind hat has a back flap drape covering the back of the neck for warmth and is fully lined, with cotton batting padding sewn inside. These Han Chinese children's and infant hats were designed to provide protection from evil spirits, demons, and ghosts, but also to influence the wearing with important qualities such as wealth, health, courage, academic success, happiness, long life, grace and beauty. The hat measures 18 inches long and 16 inches in circumference around the face. It is in good condition, with only minor wear to the silk fabric, some loose trim and is missing a pupil eye (see close-up). This is truly a beautiful piece of one of a kind antique Chinese textile art and would make for a wonderful display piece! |
