This antique Victorian Civil War era black silk quilted winter mourning sun bonnet dates from the 1860s. It is hand stitched, made of a black silk fabric, with quilting and silk pleated ruched trim edging. This women's winter widows mourning bonnet hood would have been worn for travel in a carriage and has a sun bonnet style with a curtain cape ruffle back drape, ribbon bow trim. It is fully lined in black silk. The bonnet measures 20 inches deep, 18 inches wide and 22 inch circumference around the face. It is in good condition, with only a few small frays on the back curtain drape. There is a note of provenance that belonged to Mary Stewart". This is truly a beautiful bonnet and wonderful piece of early Victoriana mourning! |
