Antique Chinese Child Infant Silk Embroidered Applique Tiger Cat Wind Hat. Tweet
|
This antique Chinese child infant silk embroidered appliqué tiger cat wind hat dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched, made of black silk with colorful raised padded satin stitch embroidery work and an appliquéd tigers face on the front. This unusual animal shaped hand crafted hat has a three dimensional face of a smiling grinning tiger on the front and a yellow and black striped detail back. The tigers ferocious powers make it an especially popular protective image and would have been used to frighten off evil spirits. This charming child's wind hat has a back flap drape covering the back of the neck for warmth and is fully lined, with a blue silk damask weave swastika pattern brocade fabric inside which is the Chinese character for longevity. These Han Chinese children's and infant hats were designed to provide protection from evil spirits, demons, and ghosts, but also to influence the wearing with important qualities such as wealth, health, courage, academic success, happiness, long life, grace and beauty. The hat measures 11 inches long and is 7 inches wide. It is in good condition, with only slight wear, some loose trim and faint stains on the back drape (see close-ups). This is truly a beautiful piece of one of a kind antique Chinese textile art and would make for a wonderful display piece! $75 |
