|
This antique Victorian Civil War era gentlemen's gold bullion embroidered brown velvet smoking cap dates from the 1860s. It is hand stitched, made of a brown and black velvet fabric, with gold bullion hand embroidery work, gold sequin beading accenting white fabric cut out applique shapes of flowers, leaves, birds, heart and cross shapes. The cap has been relined in a black silk rayon fabric inside. These rare early ethnic Turkish fez style "smoking caps" were all the rage with the style conscious Victorian gentleman. The cap measures 21 inches inside circumference. It is in fair as-is condition, with some minor wear to the velvet nap in areas, mostly around the bottom edging and there are some loose, missing gold bullion embroidery stitching, white shape cut out appliques (see close-ups).
