Antique Wedding Straight Sole Shoes Bride & Baby. |
These two pairs of antique early straight sole shoes for a bride and baby date from 1840. They are all hand made of a homespun linen fabric, kid leather lined, with an off white, brown and black striped silk fabric. These ladies ballet slipper style flat shoes have squared toes and straight leather bottom soles with no left or right distinction. The shoes measure 9 inches long and 2 1/2 inches wide. Included are a pair of child's baby shoes very similar in style to the adults, with rosette trim on the fronts. The shoes measure 5 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. Included is a hand written note of provenance stating these shoes belonged to Bertha Zetter Mengel (born Dec. 20 1820 and died Dec. 31 1899) wedding shoes made from her wedding dress material, baby shoes gift of maker. The shoes are in as-is fair condition and would be good for study, pattern, design or display. Someone at a later date tried to preserve them by covering them in wax or a shellac resin, I am not sure which. The fabric has become discolored underneath and one adult shoe is brittle with missing fabric off the front. |
