This antique Japanese silk embroidered wall hanging tapestry dates from the early 19th century. The background is made of colorful muted silk threads created with hand embroidered satin stitches and superimposed with additional laying of satin stitches over the previous laid stitchery giving the design a raised couching trapunto work style. There is a pictorial outdoor nature scene with a pagoda temple in the center and trees. This amazing awesome tapestry wall hanging is a true work of art with wonderful artistic workmanship and detail. There is a brown silk damask weave pattern trim border edging. It is backed in a hand dyed linen, with a hand blocked chain link design pattern with cranes. This large tapestry measures 78 by 56 inches. It is in good condition, with only minor wear and some fraying along the silk border edging (see close-up). This is truly an exceptional one of a kind piece of antique Japanese textile art.
