This antique Hungarian Matyo folk embroidery round tablecloth dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched, made of a black linen cloth completely covered with bright golden yellow and ecru beige silk threads done in raised padded satin stitch Matyo embroidery work. There is a floral pattern design densely embroidered onto the fabric, with hand knotted yellow silk tassel fringe trim edging. The embroidery work is exquisitely done with wonderful workmanship. Hungary's tradition of folk embroidery dates back to the middle ages. Hungarian daughters learned to embroider at a very young age and a family's wealth was often measured or determined by the number of embroidered cloths they had. This round tablecloth doily measures 72 inches in circumference, 23 inches wide, with 5 inch long fringe. It is in good useable condition, with only some missing embroidered stitching from off the back and some shorter cut fringe (see close-up). This is a truly a wonderful piece of Hungarian textile folk art. |
