This antique Chinese silk embroidered paradise flycatcher bird 9th rank badge purse dates from the end of the Qing Dynasty 1910. The badge is made of a black silk background, with colorful hand stitched raised padded satin stitch embroidery work and gold couching work outlining accents. There is a paradise flycatcher bird in the center, with bats, clouds, sun disk on the right for a female badge, lotus, peony flowers and waves of water embroidered on the bottom. The buzi badge is of the paradise flycatcher which is the symbol of the ninth civil rank badge which has been beautifully embroidered and sewn together made into a purse, perhaps for the tourist market and has a two clear imperial yellow color Peking glass loop handles on top for carrying. It is fully lined inside in blue silk, with a black grosgrain ribbon band reinforcing the handles. The badge purse measures 11 by 11 inches and is in excellent condition. This is a great one of a kind piece of antique Chinese textile art. |
