This antique Chinese forbidden stitch couching embroidery silver pheasant 5th rank badge dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. The badge is made of a black silk background, with colorful hand stitched tiny forbidden stitch Peking knot embroidery work and couching work. There is a silver pheasant bird appliqued onto the center, with the eight Precious Objects symbols of wealth and good fortune. There is an appliqued red sun disk on the left for a males badge and waves of water along the bottom. The buzi badge is of the silver pheasant which is the symbol of the fifth civil rank badge. There are remnants of the silk lining backing still attached which appears to have been glued onto it and a paper label (see close-up). There are some loose threads along the border and slight fraying of the black silk edging. The badge measures 10 by 10 inches. This is a wonderful piece of antique Chinese textile art! |
