This Victorian era antique signed Kashmir hand woven pieced paisley shawl dates from the mid 19th century. It is made of a soft fine pashmina goats fleece wool, hand stitched, embroidered, loomed, woven with colorful natural dyed wool done in strong vivid vibrant colors, including a rare purple lavender color. This stunning shawl has exquisite workmanship and detail with hand embroidered, pieced together by hand, patchwork style small pieces, with an Indian paisley design. There is a large black wool square center, which is signed in white thread stitching on the corner (see close-up). There is a fringed decorative beautiful border edging surrounding the shawl which is reversed on one side for wearing the shawl folded in a triangle. These paisley shawls were made in Kashmir, Persia and India. They were very popular during the mid to late 1800s with at least one being included in every better class trousseau. This outstanding shawl measures 82 by 82 inches and is in excellent condition, with no holes or repairs. It lays flat without any puckering and has been expertly made. This is an extraordinary and rare piece of signed paisley textile art! |
