This Victorian era antique jacquard hand loom wool paisley striped shawl dates from the 1840s. It is made of jacquard hand loomed woven wool done in natural dye colors of red, blue, green, gold, black and white. These paisley shawls were made in Kashmir, Persia, India, and in Scotland at Paisley itself. This stunning shawl has wonderful workmanship and detail with a fringed border on the two ends, a green and red selvage along the side edgings and a striped paisley pine cone shaped tear drop boteh motif design. These paisley shawls were very popular during the mid to late 1800s with at least one being included in every better class trousseau. The large shawl measures 116 inches long and 54 inches wide. It is in good condition, with only a few rewoven repair mends. This is a wonderful example of antique paisley textile art! |
