This antique Chinese red silk peony flower applique fan case holder purse dates from the mid 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is hand stitched, made of a red silk fabric, with pastel silk peony flowers appliqued hand sewn onto both the front and back. The peony is a symbol of love and affection and is representative of good luck. There is a red silk knotted rope strap on the top. This beautiful long purse would have held a Chinese hand fan and would have been attached along the belted waist since there were no pockets on clothing for carrying. The case measures 11 inches long and 2 inches wide. It is fully lined. It is in as-is fair condition, with a partial split side seam and bottom which should be sewn closed and some slight fade fraying of the silk applique's. This is a beautiful one of a kind piece of antique Chinese textile art! |
