Victorian Antique Needlepoint Petitpoint Handscreen Fixed Fan

This antique Victorian era needlepoint petitpoint embroidered handscreen fixed fan date from the 1850s. It is made of a pierced canvas background, with hand done needlepoint petitpoint embroidered flowers, a chenille trim scalloped border edging and hand painted carved wood handle. This fabulous fixed fan rigid handscreen became popular to protect the faces of women seated in front of a fire. They were often produced in pairs and when not in use served as decoration at either end of the fireplace. The fan measure 9 inches long, 11 inches wide and has a 3 inch handle. It is in good condition, but the wood handle is broken and would have been longer, also there is some loose chenille trim along the top. This is a rare museum deaccession with the itemized number written on the paper backing.
