This antique Chinese gold couching paradise flycatcher bird 9th rank badge purse dates from the end of the Qing Dynasty 1910. The badge is made of a black silk background, with gold metallic thread couching embroidery work, which tiny red stitches hold the couching work together giving it a contrasting copper color appearance. There is a paradise flycatcher bird in the center, with smoke clouds, sun disk on the left for a male badge, Eight Buddhist symbols of good fortune and waves of water embroidered on the bottom. The buzi badge is of the paradise flycatcher which is the symbol of the ninth civil rank badge which has been beautifully embroidered and sewn together made into a purse and has a two gold glitter glass ring handles on top for carrying. It is fully lined inside in a cream silk fabric, with gold metallic trim edging and loops attaching to the handles. There are black and white silk Chinese tassels knotted onto each side for decoration. The badge purse measures 12 by 12 inches and is in good condition, with only a few loose gold threads. This is a great one of a kind piece of antique Chinese textile art! |
