This antique Chinese Chaoqun court apron skirt panel embroidered gold dragon dates from the late 19th century during the Qing Dynasty. It is hand stitched, made of a orange cinnabar color silk fabric with raised padded satin stitch, forbidden stitch and gold couching hand embroidery work. There is a front facing gold "Long" five clawed dragon, with smoke clouds, flames, pearl, bat and waves of water along the bottom. The dragon symbolizes the emperor, who was regarded as the Son of Heaven. There is a black silk trim border edging with blue and white embroidered flowers, butterflies and a knotted fringe tassel trim hanging down from the bottom. This fabulous formal court attire chaofu chaoqun apron skirt panel is backed and lined in a peach silk damask peony flower brocade fabric. The panel measures 37 inches long, 7 inches wide at the top and 10 inches wide at the bottom. It is in good condition, with only some fraying along the top and side trim edging. This is truly a rare and magnificent piece of antique Chinese textile art! |
