This antique Hungarian Matyo folk embroidery fringe large square shawl tablecloth dates from the 1920s. It is hand stitched, made of a bright yellow linen cloth completely covered with blue, green and pink silk threads done in raised padded satin stitch Matyo embroidery work. There is a floral vine leaf design densely embroidered onto the fabric in a circular pattern, with hand knotted two tone yellow and blue silk fringe trim edging. The embroidery work is exquisitely done with wonderful workmanship. Hungary's tradition of folk embroidery dates back to the middle ages. Hungarian daughters learned to embroider at a very young age and a family's wealth was often measured or determined by the number of embroidered cloths they had. This heavy large size squared shawl style throw tablecloth measures 55 by 55 inches, with 10 inch long fringe. It is in excellent condition. This is a truly a rare and exceptional piece of Hungarian textile folk art! |
