This antique Hungarian Matyo folk purple embroidery large square tablecloth dates from the 1920s. It is made of a heavy black silk fabric background covered with varying shades of purple silk threads done in raised padded satin stitch Matyo embroidery work. There is a floral vine leaf design densely embroidered onto the fabric in circular pattern designs. The embroidery work is exquisitely done with wonderful workmanship and the fabric is lined and backed. Hungary's tradition of folk embroidery dates back to the middle ages. Hungarian daughters learned to embroider at a very young age and a family's wealth was often measured or determined by the number of embroidered cloths they had. This heavy large size square tablecloth measures 46 by 46 inches. It is in good condition, but has not been cleaned, with only a few faint small age spot stains. This is a truly a wonderful piece of Hungarian textile folk art! $200 |
