This antique 18th century hand painted paper sequin pierced carved folding fan and box dates from the late 1700s. It is made of pleated paper with a hand painted vignette medallion on the front, hand stitched gold metal sequins and gold foil trim edging along the top. There is a beautiful vignette of a romantic couple in love with cupid, white doves and garland of flowers on a pedestal. This fabulous folding fan has a carved and pierced bone sticks and guards and rivet holding the fan together at the bottom. The fan measures 9 1/2 inches long and 16 inches wide when opened . It comes with the decorative gold embossed paper box which slides open to reveal the fan inside. The box measures 11 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. Both are in good as-is condition, with some wear, tiny rips along the top folds of the fan, faint foxing age spot stains and a broken stick at the base (see close-up). This is truly a rare and wonderful early piece of 18th century fan art! |
