This early Victorian era antique chintz calico cotton fabric 12 patch square block quilt dates from 1850. It is all hand stitched, with a white cotton background, made up of a variety of colorful chintz, calico cotton fabric pieces. This early quilt has been beautifully handmade with wonderful workmanship, done in a 12 patch signature square style pattern design and tiny quilted stitching, approximately 10 stitches per inch. It is backed in a white cotton fabric, with cotton batting inside, quilting stitching going through the backside and a folded over binding border edging. The quilt measures 89 by 76 inches. It is in fair as-is condition, has not been cleaned and came straight out of a trunk. There are several small stains scattered about and a larger water spot stain in the upper corner, two small holes in each corner where it was perhaps hung and also a few deteriorated frayed fabric square pieces (see close-ups). This is truly a superb piece of antique textile quilting folk art!
