This
vintage Tree of Life bird crewel work embroidery coat dates from
the 1950s. It is made of a fine black merino wool, with colorful
tambour chain stitch, and crewel work embroidery designs. There
is a modified Jacobean design of the Tree of Life with colorful
birds perched on the branches. It is a pattern full of symbolism;
the "tree" represents the passage through life from the
roots to then leaves. There is a mixture of floral and oriental
motifs from India. The design work completely covers the entire
coat. This stunning swing style boxy coat is fully lined, with a
mandarin collar, and black wool buttons down the front for closure.
These crewel work style garments were made in Kashmir, and India.
The coat measures 26 inches long, with a 44 inch waist, 46 inch
bust, 19 inch back, and 18 inch long sleeves. This quality made
coat is in excellent clean wearable condition with no moth holes
or damage. It is truly a fabulous piece of wearable art.
