Antique Kashmir Hand Embroidered Red Wool Paisley Shawl.

Antique Kashmir Hand Embroidered Red Wool Paisley Shawl Front view.

This antique Kashmir hand embroidered red wool paisley shawl dates from the early 1800s. It is all hand stitched and hand loomed, made of a homespun woven red wool and natural dyes. This stunning shawl has wonderful workmanship and detail, with a yellow thread hand stitched embroidered paisley pine cone shaped tear drop motif known as the boteh and floral leaf design. There is a colorful hand embroidered, pieced, patchwork fringed decorative border edging surrounding the entire shawl. There is a small green wool embroidered outline of a star in the center which has been replaced in the middle with red velvet fabric at a later date (see close-up). These early paisley shawls were made in Kashmir, Persia and India. This lovely large shawl throw measures 72 by 66 inches. It is in good useable condition, with a few small frayed holes in the center and along the border edging, as well as some loose missing thread embroidery stitches (see close-up). This is truly a rare and extraordinary early piece of paisley textile art.
