Antique Victorian Sewing Box Slope Travel Writing Desk Front view.

This Victorian era antique sewing box notion slope travel writing desk dates from the 1850s. It is made of a black ebony wood inlay, with remnants of a hand painted white cherub cupid shooting an arrow on the top lid (see close-up). It has the original blue silk and paper lining interior compartments. There is a small oval shape mirror inside the lid. This ladies sewing box notion travel writing lap desk has a top level with blue velvet lidded compartments, brass hardware knobs and lift out trays with underneath storage for containing sewing and writing notions. The rectangle box has a hinged bottom which opens up creating two halves forming a silk covered writing surface. It has a front locking mechanism, with original key included and is still in working order. This portable slope traveling writing desk box was invaluable to the Victorians for storing writing materials; valuables, including money and jewelry; vital documents, such as passports and wills; and private correspondence. It could easily fit into one's luggage for travel. The box measures 11 1/2 by 8 by 5 1/2 inches. It has been used, with some wear, fraying of the silk writing surface and paper peeling, staining of the inside compartments. The outside wood has some scratches, chipping, a crack on the top lid and some separation along the bottom. It could use some restoration.
