Antique Japanese Silk Embroidered Couching Dragon Birds Wall Hanging Tapesrty. Tweet
|
This antique Japanese silk embroidered couching dragon birds wall hanging tapestry dates during the Meiji period from the mid 19th century. It is made of gold metallic and silk threads created with hand embroidered satin stitches and superimposed with additional laying of satin stitches over the previous laid stitchery giving the design a raised couching trapunto work style. There is a pictorial scene with a dragon and pearl in the center, surrounded by fans with a variety of birds, cranes, peacocks, pheasants, dragons inside them, temple shrines at the top, flowers, water at the bottom, with a koi carp fish swimming up stream. This amazing tapestry wall hanging is a true work of art with wonderful artistic workmanship and detail. There is a blue silk brocade damask weave pattern trim border edging and brass hooks for hanging. It is pieced, backed in a variety of fabrics, blue & gold silk fabric with a floral design and a black & gold damask brocade crane pattern fabric trim. This large tapestry wall hanging measures 76 by 51 inches. It is in as-is poor condition needing restoration, with some loose frayed embroidery couching threads, fraying separation along the silk border fabric and some faint water spot stains (see close-ups). It has not been cleaned and is dusty from storage. This is truly an exceptional one of a kind piece of antique Japanese textile art! |
